Hoffman/Markley Streamliner

Hoffman/Markley Steamliner
Top Speed 382 MPH (Retired as of 9/1996)

About the Streamliner Designed in 1988 / Completed September 1990
Original Intent To Break The Current (1990) F.I.A. International 5-Liter Record Of 298 Mph
Accomplishments
  • Exceeded the F.I.A> Record of 307 MPH (1992) by 50 MPH with an average speed 357.472 MPH, September 25, 1992
  • BNI / USFRA Record C/BFS 306-372 CU.IN. 365 MPH, 1996 (Al Teague has since raised the record by .6 MPH )
  • BNI / USFRA Record D/BFS 261-305 CU.IN. 358 MPH, 1992
  • BNI / USFRA Record E/BFS 184-260 CU.IN. 348 MPH, 1995
Secondary Goals
  • To be the first vehicle under 5-liters to exceed 400 mph.
  • Our 300 cu.in. Motor on 40% nitro expected to run 405-410 mph.
  • The current unlimited record is 409 mph.
  • Note: Still think we could have done it, but the 45 year old motors have a hard time taking the punishment. 382 mph in 5 miles isn’t so bad.

  • Trucking hauled dirt and road construction material.
  • The most technical and fun car I ever drove.

  • Bill was learning to make power and I was learning to drive.
  • Happy to qualify and always did.
  • Lots of barbeques and fun at the track.

1991

  • Bill makes great power and I did pretty good at driving.
  • Low et 5 out of 7 races attended.
  • 5.98 sec et at Bakersfield (1 of only 2 5 sec runs that year nationwide)

  • Hard to see where your going with the blower in front of you.
  • Even harder at night with oil in your face at 230 mph

1992

  • Started at the end of the year

1993

  • Won 5 out of 7 races
  • The races we didn't win we got a runner up at Sacramento (blew up the motor in the semi's on a national record breaking run - 6.39 et) and a semi final finish at Bakersfield when we lost oil pressure on the burnout.

1994

  • Lots of oil in my face.
  • Everyone else caught up and then passed us in speed.
  • Pushed the little small block harder but it didn't like it.
